Description

Richmond, VA- Traders Bank (of the City of Richmond) $100 Oct. 7, 1860 G10a Jones-Littlefield BR110-30 PMG Very Fine 20.
The bank was authorized in 1860 and remained in business until being physically destroyed during the fire that ravaged parts of Richmond when the city fell to Union forces in April, 1865. The bank was technically still in business for about another year when its statement of condition was published, showing a balance sheet awash in worthless Confederate notes and bonds. Apparently the bank stood prepared to redeem its circulation at 30¢ on the dollar in specie at that time. The note features a portrait of a young girl inside a large green C protector at center flanked by a large rendition of the state coat of arms at left and Franklin teaching a young child by a bust of Washington at right. There are additional green security devices as well. PMG mentions some pinholes which have virtually no impact on this very rare note's desirability. This is the first time we have been able to offer this denomination from this bank in non-reprint, fully issued form.
