Description

Scarce $8 Proof

Richmond, VA- Farmers Bank of Virginia $8 18__ Design 8B Jones-Littlefield BR25-41 Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
The Farmers Bank of Virginia was one of the state's large multi-branch institutions that was authorized in 1812 and served the state until after the Civil War, with branches in Alexandria, Blacksburg, Charlottesville, Danville, Farmville, Fredericksburg, Lewisburg, Lynchburg, Norfolk, Petersburg, Winchester, and Wytheville. The $8 note design features America flanked by Ceres and a sailor flanked by vignettes of an allegorical woman holding a book at left and a scantily clad Liberty seated with an eagle and shield at right. The note is printed on India paper mounted on an original archive paper sheet with no forms of cancellation present. It is very likely that this note was part of a single sheet of $9-$8-$7-$6 Proofs that appeared as Lot 2003 in the 1990 ABNCo Archives Sale. Furthermore it appears that this and the other three odd denomination Proof notes ($6, $7, and $9) from this issuer in this auction were all part of the same sheet based on the faint transfer images from another sheet that appear on the back of each note. Quite possibly unique in Proof form.
