Description

Richmond, VA- "C." Constant 5¢ Jan. 13, 1862 Jones-Littlefield PR60-194 Remainder PMG Choice Fine 15 Net.
It is quite possible that this is actually an issue of F(ruma) Constant who ran a confectionary store in Richmond according to the 1860 Federal census. Note that the form of the initial is different than the "C" in "Constant." The note has vignettes of Ceres standing at left, a dog head at center representing Fidelity, and an end panel at right with an oval vignette of an allegorical woman and a sailing vessel. PMG notes that this example has been backed. In any case a rare note, with Jones estimating between 5 and 9 surviving examples. This is the first offering of this denomination from this issuer in one of our public auctions.
