Description

Richmond, VA- Confederate Oyster House 5¢ Feb. 3, 1862 Jones-Littlefield PR60-180 PMG Choice Fine 15 Net.
There were no fewer than eight oyster dealers listed in the 1860 Richmond City Directory. Not surprisingly, the Confederate Oyster House likely did not survive the fall of Richmond on April 3, 1865; certainly not while retaining the name. Thanks to the name, notes from this issuer are quite popular and sought after. The note itself is very rare, with a Jones-Littlefield rarity assignment of R-7, or 2-4 known surviving examples. PMG indicates that the note has been repaired, but the visual impact is quite minimal. This marks only the fourth time that we have handled a note of any denomination from this issuer, with this being the first 5¢.
