Description

Rare Odd Denomination Charlottesville $6 Note

Charlottesville, VA- Monticello Bank $6 July 1, 1861 G16a Jones-Littlefield BC25-17A PMG Choice Fine 15.
The bank was authorized by the General Assembly in 1853 and initially operated as a free bank. While the bank survived the end of the war, its post war balance sheet suggests that it perished in the first couple of years after the war's conclusion. It did not originally issue any notes below $5, and probably made at least limited use of its odd denomination $6, $7, $8, and $9 notes as an alternative method of making change (change for a $10 used to make a $2 purchase could be made with an $8 for example). The $6 note features two gentlemen conducting business standing next to a tobacco hogshead. While the note has seen circulation, it has survived the experience without attracting any repairs although it does have some minor staining.
