Description

J. WHATMAN Watermarked $100

T41 $100 1862- PF-63 Cr. 331A PMG Very Fine 25.
This is a rare 1863-dated T41 $100 variety, printed on paper watermarked J. WHATMAN 1862. The back of the note has a manuscript endorsement done in red ink indicating that it was initially issued to the field on March 11, 1863 along with IP stamps from Jackson and Columbus, MS paying interest to January 1, 1864 and 1865 respectively. The serial number on this note is in the tightly concentrated serial number range reported in Fricke (2005) and would be near the top of the condition census had it been known to Fricke at the time. The 2014 surviving population was estimated to be only 21-50 examples. Rarely offered, this is a great opportunity to obtain this watermark for your Confederate collection.
