Description

Very Rare and Attractive Fr. 1188 $50 Gold Note
Only Ten Examples Reported

Fr. 1188 $50 1882 Gold Certificate PMG Very Fine 30.
A significant Gold Certificate design type and rarity. There are only 10 examples listed on Track & Price, with this near the top of the condition ladder. Sometimes years pass between offerings. Notes with this new 1882 $50 face design (known as the "earlier" design for that year) are rare as well with approximately 50 survivors known across seven Friedberg numbers. Prominent statesman Silas Wright is featured at the upper left, and the small brown treasury seal is at the bottom center. The ornate orange back, with the GOLD at the center on a shimmering background, has an eagle vignette at the right end. Mike acquired this important gold note rarity with its illustrious pedigree at our 2018 Chambliss sale. Prior to that, it was sold in the 1993 Herman Halpern Collection auction. The face and back have excellent color and full margins. PMG notes "Restoration," but that is difficult to see. Ex: our 2018 CSN sale, lot 22490; Carlson Chambliss Collection; Lyn Knight, August 2005 sale, lot 1629 (realized $17,250; Lyn Knight, October 1996 sale, lot 515; Stack's, March 1993 sale, lot 477 (realized $3,600); Herman Halpern Collection. A key opportunity to acquire this seldom-encountered type.
From The Mike Coltrane Collection.
