Description

J. WHATMAN 1862

T34 $5 1861 PF-7 Cr. 265 PMG Very Fine 20.
228,644 T34 $5s, printed by Keatinge & Ball, were issued between May 12 and December 8, 1862. This is a very rare variety, printed on paper watermarked J. WHATMAN 1862. According to Fricke (2005) only about 150 notes on this paper were issued, with perhaps 6-10 known survivors (Fricke 2014). The watermark is difficult to locate on this note and it appears, based on the annotation on the back, B-262, that someone decades ago thought that this was Bradbeer 262; the plain paper variety. Although not part of the original 2005 Fricke census for this variety, it would be at, or very close to, the top of the list if included. A rare opportunity to add a very rare and key Confederate variety.
