Spectacular 1861 $100 Virginia Treasury Note
Richmond, VA- Commonwealth of Virginia $100 Aug. 13, 1861 Cr. 1
Jones-Littlefield VT02-06 PCGS Banknote About Unc 53.An absolutely stunning representative of a highly prized and extremely rare type, this $100 was emitted as part of the first true Civil War era series for Virginia Treasury Notes. This note bore interest at a rate of six percent and was payable twelve months after the date of issuance. A total of 6,150 1861 $100 examples were issued, but by late 1863, just 83 of that count were left outstanding. Our current offering was produced by Hoyer & Ludwig of Richmond, VA, a firm which also contracted with the Confederate States government to print a variety of their type notes. At left, Ceres gestures to the right side of the note as she holds grain, and the central portion is graced by a portrait of George Washington. This portrait was also utilized on the T7 and T8 Confederate Treasury Notes of 1861 (also designed by Hoyer & Ludwig). Flanking the portrait is a vibrant red underprint comprised of two seated allegorical females, one with a cornucopia at left and one seated on a large chest at right. Between them is a large layered "100". We last auctioned this piece in September 2018, and since then, we have offered just three comparable examples. The most recent to cross our desk, a PMG AU 53 certified note, brought $9,600 in September 2023. In Hugh Shull's 2007 reference, the author assigned a Rarity 10 rating to the design, affirming that 5-15 examples of the type were extant. As we are aware of perhaps a half dozen examples, this estimate still holds true today. Only light evidence of circulation is present on this piece, and it has survived without attracting any meaningful condition impairments. A true Virginia rarity, this lovely note will take the next collection it graces to a new level.
