Description

Charlottesville, VA- Monticello Bank $20 July 1, 1861 G10a Jones-Littlefield BC25-30A PMG Very Fine 25.
The Monticello Bank continued to use inventories of so-called "registered design" notes after withdrawing from the state's Independent Bank program (as did most other Independent Banks) in 1860-61. These remaining notes were simply issued without the Treasurer's countersignature. In addition, the bank also had redesigned $20s, with a female portrait replacing the state free banking die and signature space, printed. The original design $20s like this note are quite rare, with Jones estimating a tiny surviving population of just 2-4 examples issued without the Treasurer countersignature. This note is, in fact, the first example of this variety which we have offered, joining another example in more humble condition that was signed by the Treasurer.
