Description

Salt Lake City, UT- Bingham Canyon & Camp Floyd R.R. Co. Redeemable at Salt Lake City National Bank of Utah $1 Post Note Jan. 15, 1874 Rust 129 Nyholm 128 PMG About Uncirculated 55.
Gold and silver were found in Bingham Canyon in 1863, and the Bingham Canyon & Camp Floyd Rail Road Company completed its rail line in 1873. Shortly thereafter, the focus shifted to mining high quality copper ore. Eventually, the ever-expanding open pit started to swallow the town, and the last few remaining buildings were razed in 1972. The elaborate $1 design features a vignette of an oncoming passenger train rounding a curve flanked by vignettes of a Native American warrior at left and Minerva standing at right. A large red 1 protector and security panel as well as a green decorative back complete the design. This example has ample margins all the way around and dark pen signatures of Secretary Wm. B. Welles and President C.W. Scofield. It is tied with two other examples at present for the highest recorded grade in the PMG Population Report.
