Description

Famous Santa Claus Vignette

Lancaster, NH- White Mountain Bank $2 May 1, 1860 G8a PMG Fine 12.
The White Mountain Bank was established with two different charters; the first, which was issued on January 1, 1849, was followed by a second charter on July 12, 1850. Operations did not begin until 1852, but lasted until January 1, 1875. The deuce in this lot with a vignette of Santa Clause lifting off from a roof with his reindeer is a highly popular Obsolete. This bank was the only organization in New Hampshire to utilize a Santa Clause vignette on their paper money. There is also a depiction of a passenger train at lower right and an illustration of two allegorical females at lower left. A red TWO overprint at center is also present. PMG mentions minor repairs to several small body holes which do little to take away from the overall appearance. We auctioned a PMG VG 10 with minor repairs in May 2024 for $2,040. Our current offering should easily top that realization.
