National Bank Ch. # 11130 PMG Very Fine 30.A wonderful Serial Number 1 Arizona large size note that we last offered in our 2019 FUN auction where we said, "We are pleased to offer this evening a significant Arizona rarity that is one of fewer than ten Serial Number 1 large size notes reported for the entire state. It is the first Number 1 large size from Arizona to appear in one of our auctions in almost ten years. This note is one of two Number 1 notes known from this Maricopa County bank that failed in 1932 with the other piece being a $10 that made its last auction appearance in 2008. This Mesa bank presents an interesting situation as all of its large size notes bear a double bank serial number, a feature that was not adopted by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing until 1925. Therefore, although it opened for business in 1918, the bank chose not to issue any notes until at least 1925. The note we are offering tonight does have several folds and some minor staining in its margins. However, it retains bright paper and traces of original embossing indicating it never really circulated, but was likely carried as a treasured souvenir by a proud bank employee." This is a great Arizona note that fetched $15,600 over five years ago and should certainly approach that number again.
