Description
Hastings, MN- Bank of Hastings $1 0ct 1, 1863 G2a Hewitt B160-D1b PMG Very Fine 20.In 1861, Lewis S. Follett and Seymour G. Renick created a private bank under the banner of the Bank of Hastings which, in turn, became a state-chartered free bank in 1863. After a short period of time, during which the bank issued $25,000 in notes, it was decided to convert the institution to a national bank. The First National Bank of Hastings was organized on July 15, 1864 and chartered on August 18, 1864. The state bank circulation, which was redeemed by the national bank when presented, stood at just $441 in 1868. The $1 design features a marvelously detailed steamboat vignette flanked by others of a farmer with his dog at left and a farm girl at right. A large green ONE protector completes the design. The note was apparently redeemed by its national bank descendant as evidenced by a somewhat blurry PAID rubberstamp and multiple POCs in the signature lines. PMG additionally notes a small tear that is not readily apparent through the holder. Hewitt was aware of four surviving $1s in 2006 and we have offered only one other $1 in our public auctions. That piece was from The Eric P. Newman Collection. This is a great opportunity to acquire a rare piece of Minnesota banking history.
