Michigan Rarity Plated in Both Standards

St. Joseph, MI- Commercial Bank of Michigan $3 Jan. 1, 1838 MI-375 G6 Lee STJ 2-3 PMG Very Fine 20.
Michigan issued bills and "wildcat" remainders from the late 1830s are a broad topic and widely collected. Two exceptionally researched books, the standards for their times and to this day, by Harold Bowen and more recently Wallace Lee have contributed to that enjoyment. Simultaneous with that was local and national market-making for the notes over many decades. The greatest rarities from this state stood out for decades and recognized early on like this prize $3 which is an incredible opportunity for its winning bidder. A lovely layout by Draper, Toppan, Longacre & Co. An allegorical female representing Agriculture, Commerce and Plenty is seated upon the center of the title. Standing Indian chief left and Justice at the right. Fully signed and issued, serial 1406, making this the Bowen first and then Lee plated notes. Not illustrated in Haxby. Our 2004 Thompson Collection Michigan auction had only a $5 from this issuer. The Lee catalog value assigned at $1,200 is telling as well. PMG notes stains, but we find that it is just some subtle foxing, scattered at that. Winner take all perhaps for this impressive Michigan opportunity.
