Extremely Rare Massachusetts Obsolete with T17 Vignette

Northampton, MA- Holyoke Bank $100 Oct. 7, 1863 G26c PMG Very Fine 20.
The Holyoke Bank was chartered on April 25, 1848, and opened to the public on September 1 of that year. The bank ceased operations in April 1864, giving way to the First National Bank of Northampton, charter 383. Our current offering is an excessively rare high denomination piece that was imaged as the plate note on page 933 of James Haxby's United States Obsolete Bank Notes 1782-1866 Volume 2. The center features a vignette of three allegorical females. From left to right, they are identified as Commerce, Ceres, and Navigation. A train traveling across a bridge is depicted at lower left, and a sailing ship braving the high seas is at lower right. Medallion heads at upper right and left and several green protectors complete the design. This examples has six POCs and was previously mounted. We auctioned this exact note in October 2023 for $1,200. That figure is likely to be tested or exceeded tonight.
