Description

Newport, KY- Newport Safety Fund Bank of Kentucky $5-$5-$5-$5 18__ G8 x4 Hughes 645 x4 Uncut Proof Sheet PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The bank was a short-lived affair that was chartered in 1851 and suspended on October 14, 1854 due to an overissue of small denomination bills that had no security behind them. This sheet has four $5s, the lowest authorized denomination under the terms of the bank's original charter. The design features a portrait of Zachary Taylor flanked by Ceres and Navigation at center with a vignette of Hebe offering water to an eagle and the Kentucky coat of arms/banking die at left and a portrait of Millard Fillmore at right. The sheet is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with six POCs in the signature lines of each note. There were four examples of this sheet in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale.
