Description

Newport, KY- Newport Safety Fund Bank of Kentucky $1-$1-$2-$3 Feb. 2, 1852 G2-G2-G4-G6 Hughes UNL Uncut Proof Sheet PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The charter for the bank was amended by the state legislature in late 1851- early 1852 allowing the bank to issue denominations of less than $5 that could be issued without a state officer countersignature and without any provisions for their security in the form of bonds or real estate. Predictably, the bank had a very large over-issue of these low denomination notes, leading to its suspension in October 1854. This sheet comprises two $1s, a $2, and a $3. The $1 design features a vignette of three men solving the world's problems titled Farmer and Mechanics flanked by vignettes of Ceres or Proserpina, an unidentified male portrait at left, and Liberty and America seated at right. The $2 features an unidentified male portrait flanked by an young Native American family and a teacher with her students. A portrait of Washington is at left and Liberty is at right. The $3 features the same unidentified male portrait and a large almost panoramic vignette of an angel with Prosperity and Navigation. The sheet is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with three POCs in the signature line of each note. There were three examples of this sheet in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale, with evidence that at least one was cut after the sale.
