Description
Excessively Rare State of Georgia $5,000 Treasury Certificate in Top Condition
Milledgeville, GA- State of Georgia $5,000 Treasury Certificate
Mar. 14, 1864 Cr. TC05 PMG Choice Very Fine 35.The State of Georgia issued a series of very large denomination Treasury Certificates whose purpose was to reduce the amount of Georgia Treasury Notes in circulation. The Treasury Certificates were issued in $20,000, $10,000, and $5,000 denominations which bore either six or eight percent interest. A total of 49 6% and 34 8% $5,000 Certificates were issued and, all told, the certificates were successful in reducing the amount of Treasury Notes in circulation by $1,465,000. Needless to say, very few of these certificates, have survived to the present day. This certificate, bearing serial number 10 is a large format piece with a bright red-orange $5000 protector and is free of any repairs or meaningful impairments. This is an important opportunity to acquire a rare and historic piece of Civil War fiscal history. At present, we are aware of just two examples of this certificate, with the other being somewhat impaired.
