Description

La Grange, GA- La Grange Bank $5-$5-$5-$10 Jan. 4, 1855 as G2 x3 - as G4 Uncut Proof Sheet PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ;
La Grange, GA- La Grange Bank $5-$5-$5-$10 Backs Uncut Proof Sheet PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The bank was a fairly short-lived affair that appears to have closed during the first year of the Civil War. These two uncut sheets make up the faces and backs of the bank's $5 and $10 notes, datelined Jan. 4, 1855. The $5 design features a vignette of two allegorical women, perhaps Agriculture and Commerce, seated at the shore and an oval vignette of a train flanked by oval vignettes of a woman at left and a female cooper. The $10 design features vignettes of Minerva and Liberty with an eagle. The second sheet has the red-orange denominational backs for the $5 and $10. Both sheets are printed on India paper mounted on card. These cards, in turn, appear to have once been glued on Danforth, Wright archive book pages. The Face Proof sheet has six POCs in the signature lines of each note. PMG notes that there is some "ink rub" on the uncut sheet of backs (faint images of printed designs from another sheet that was in contact with the sheet). These two sheets were part of Lot 282 in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale and likely are the only surviving examples in Proof form. (Total: 2 sheets)
