Panama, FL- East Florida Steam Saw Mill 50¢ Jan. 1, 1818(?) Benice 4 PMG Fine 12.
Panama (not to be confused with present-day Panama City) is now part of Jacksonville. Charles F. Sibbald founded the town and built this saw mill on land granted from Spain in 1816. The sawmill was destroyed by fire in 1828 and rebuilt a year later. The note features a vignette of Prosperity and a portrait of Lafayette and was printed by Rawdon, Wright & Co. One of a small handful of examples known.
