Description

Red Wing, MN- Bank of Red Wing $3 18__ G6 Hewitt B500-D3a Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The bank was organized in 1859 and opened for a brief period of time before voluntarily closing in October of the same year. Its notes were redeemed by the auditor at par. The $3 design features a farmer and a Native American seated by a large federal shield at center flanked by vignettes of a farmer feeding a horse and three cherubs cavorting around a large 3. The note is printed on India paper with the usual small POCs in the signature lines. PMG notes that some small POC tears have been sealed. Neither the bank nor the denomination were represented in the tiny Minnesota section of the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. Hewitt estimates that there are fewer (probably far fewer) than six surviving Proofs of this design. We are unaware of any public appearances in at least the last decade.
