Description

Denver, CO- Thorrington's Boot and Shoe Office $5 Baseball Advertising Note ND (1887) Vlack UNL PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
John Thorrington was a boot and shoe dealer located at the address on this note as listed in the 1887 Denver City Directory. The portrait on the face of this advertising note is that of A.G. Spalding, co-founder of Spalding Sporting Goods and President of the Chicago White Stockings (the modern day Chicago Cubs). A former pitcher, he was also involved in organizing the National League and even wrote the first official rules for baseball. The team players on the back are from the Chicago White Stockings. In 1887, the White Stockings finished with a record of 71-50; good for third place in the National League, 6-1/2 games out of first. This is the same note we have auctioned two times previously, now graded by PMG rather than by PCGS.
