Description
Boulder, CO- Levy, Strasburger, & Bergheim Baseball Advertising Note ND (1888) Vlack UNL PCGS Very Fine 35.The firm of Levy, Strasburger & Bergheim was engaged in the clothing business, including accessories, hats, and shoes in 1888. The business had been formed in 1876 with the Levy Brothers taking Strasburger as a partner. By 1888, Jonas Bergheim had been elevated from head clerk to a partner in the business, and, by 1892, the business had been taken over by Bergheim and another partner, operating under the banner of the Boston Clothing Store. The portrait on the face of the note is that of Bill Watkins who served as the manager (1885-88) of the National League Detroit Wolverines who were around from 1881 until 1888, when the team was disbanded after winning the pre-World Series baseball championship the year before. The 1888 campaign saw a record of 68-63 earning a fifth place finish in the National League. The back of the note features thumbnail portraits of key players on the team. PCGS notes some edge tears. In addition, there are couple of minor paper faults on the face hidden in the "r" of "Bergheim" and in the green seal at about the 10 o'clock position that have minimal impact on this rare western ad note. This marks the first appearance of this unlisted Colorado issuer in any of our auctions.
