Description

T23 $10 1861 PF-1 Cr. 153 PMG Very Fine 25.
This design was developed by Leggett, Keatinge & Ball from a repurposed plate donated by the Farmers & Mechanics Bank of Savannah to the Confederate government in 1861. The bank, which was formerly the Mechanics Savings Bank of Savannah until a name change in 1860, had no use for the plates because of the name change. A total of 20,333 notes were printed and issued between November 15 and December 30, 1861. The design features a wagonload of cotton bales rumbling down a street flanked by an oval portrait of John Elliot Ward, one time Mayor of Savannah, at left. The exact allegiances of Ward during the war are quite cloudy. Although he has traditionally been portrayed as a Unionist, there is also clear evidence that he assisted the Confederacy with a number of diplomatic missions in Europe and China during the war. A vignette titled The Corn Gatherer is at right. An orange X-TEN-X protector completes the design. This protector retains its original orange color on this note with virtually no signs of oxidation or fading. PMG mentions an annotation (a penciled Criswell number) on the back that affects nothing.
