Description

Finest Known $6 Georgia Colonial

Georgia September 10, 1777 $6 PMG About Uncirculated 55.
A remarkably sharp vignette of a millstone on palm tree is the highlight of this serial number 2233, blue seal $6 Georgia Colonial. The Latin motto "OPPRESSA SURGIT," which translates as "After being crushed it rises" arcs across the top of the vignette. Five signatures including W. Hohendorf, C.F. Chevalier, Richard Wylly, Nehemiah Wade, and William O'Bryen remain quite legible. Printed in red and black text, the note features intricate border ornamentation on all sides and with margins beyond it at all points. This is a superbly printed and exceptionally well detailed example of this tougher Georgia denomination note. Despite PMG noting a split repair, this is easily the finest example they have seen. Originally selling in the Ford sales over two decades ago for $3,450, it would not be a surprise to see that mark surpassed this evening.
