Description
Fr. 809a $5 1918 Federal Reserve Bank Note PCGS Apparent Fine 15.Fr. 809a is an intriguing "error" note which William Philpott wrote about almost 60 years ago. He states that the plate date of May 18, 1914 was found on all other Federal Reserve Bank Notes, save from those issued by the San Francisco district. All of which, regardless of denomination or year of issue, bore the date of May 20, 1914. It remains unknown whether the engraver of this 1918 $5 note was correcting what he perceived to be an earlier error (the Fr. 809 San Francisco $5 note has the same signatures as Fr. 809a, but the May 20, 1914 date) or whether the San Francisco Fed officials were instructed to correct their errant plate date to conform with notes from every other district. The result was a short-lived issue that remains quite scarce in all grades today with a census of a mere 20 pieces. Some minor repair work has been performed on the back of this moderately circulated example.
