Lovely Mansfield $20 1882 Brown Back

Mansfield, IL - $20 1882 Brown Back Fr. 504 The First NB Ch. # (M)6096
This small town bank was the only issuer in Mansfield, a quiet village in central Illinois. Not much has happened in Mansfield over the years, and the level of business activity in the community was barely enough to keep the bank's doors open for five years before the venture was wound up in 1907. In a bit more than five years only 541 sheets of $10 and $20 Brownbacks were circulated, but, quite surprisingly, three pieces have survived. All three have been held in long term collections for many years, with this the only example to come on the market since 1990, when we sold it as part of the Lynn Shaw collection in September of 2000. Bright PCGS Extremely Fine 45PPQ, a lovely note worthy of a very strong bid.
