Every great collection has its share of notes that were obtained long ago and await discovery by a present day cataloguer. This piece is just such an item. Back plate 629 Mules are at least ten times more scarce than are back plate 637 Mules, with even the most advanced of collectors having only a circulated back plate 629 example. In the recent Strasburg sale, a stained Very Fine example was the best their consignor could obtain in twenty years of searching, with the cataloguer noting that this example was the first they had ever offered publicly or privately. Until this piece turned up, we had never even heard of a back plate 629 Mule being offered in true uncirculated grade. This piece is absolutely original, with perfect centering and great paper quality. It is removed from the gem grade only by a few as-made paper wrinkles. Items such as this almost defy estimate in this market, but if rarity and desirability are any guides here, expect this piece to reach or exceed...
