Description

Swartwout, TX- Town of Swartwout 1 Share ND (ca. 1838-39) PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
This town, no longer in existence, was laid out on the east bank of the Trinity River, 75 miles north of Houston in 1838. It thrived until the 1870s when railroads made river traffic decline. The post office was discontinued in 1875 and the town was virtually abandoned. Most of the original town site was washed away in the 1930s. This is a stock certificate, one of 100 issued by the town's promoters. There is a decorative panel across the left end of this example which has some toning and minor ink erosion recorded by PMG.
