Description

Memphis, TN- Southern Bank of Tennessee $3 Dec. 1, 1853 G6 Garland 757 Schafluetzel-Carson M-B.SBT-3-1 Remainder PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
The Southern Bank of Tennessee was chartered in 1854 and liquidated shortly after September 7, 1858. Winston J. Davie was elected president, while W.S. Macrae became cashier. Davie was a prominent Memphis banker from Kentucky and was also affiliated with the Bank of America, whose chief branch was located in Clarksville, TN. After the war, he returned to Kentucky and became the first Kentucky Commissioner of Agriculture. This popular odd denomination $3 note features a portrait of Andrew Jackson at lower right, a depiction of two men exchanging formalities at center, and a Native American family at left looking into the distance at a settlement. The central illustration resembles the Kentucky state seal quite closely. We last auctioned this exact note for $312 in January 2025. PMG mentions a small tear.
