Description

Memphis, TN- City of Memphis $5 Jan. 1, 1867 Schafluetzel M-G.M-5-Pf Proprietary Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
Like many cities, the city of Memphis issued notes during the first decade after the Civil War, generally in the face of federal laws prohibiting such private issues. The note features a busy river wharf scene flanked by a vignette of Minerva and another allegorical woman standing with the Stars and Stripes. A green V-FIVE-V protector completes the design. This is a so-called Proprietary Proof printed by ABNCo in the 20th century from the original plates for general corporate programs and purposes. The green color for the protector is a bit off from the actual color used in the 19th century and the printing quality is not up to the original standards, with the steamboats and other elements being indistinct. It is not certain how many of this note were issued nor when they were printed.
