Description

Unlisted Fully Engraved Date Variety

Titusville, PA- Petroleum Bank $5 Sep. 1, 1863 as G6a PMG Choice Fine 15.
The $5 design features the state free banking die at top center surrounded by two green V protectors and a small green 5 - 5 protector over the denomination. A large portrait of Franklin is at left and an oil field scene is at right. PMG mentions that the note is repaired, but the very small repairs are of minimal consequence and are not distracting. We are aware of seven extant examples of this note at present, with only two having the fully engraved September 1, 1863, date as found on this example. Virtually all of the surviving notes from this bank have seen extensive circulation as evidenced by this note sitting in the "top pop" position in the PMG Population Report at present.
