Description

(Unknown Location / Macon?), MS- State of Mississippi $10 Back Essay 186_ Cr. 47 PMG Very Fine 25.
This $10 back is an essay from a rather enigmatic series of notes that appear to have been issued, or at least contemplated, near the end of the war. Jackson had fallen in May 1863, making it almost certain that these notes were, in fact, actually issued, or intended for issue, from Macon, MS. $20, $50, and $100 denominations are known, with only the $50 seemingly legitimately issued. To date, a $10 face design that would have been paired with this back design has not been discovered. It is unlikely that such a face design will be discovered in the future. The green design is quite simple, with the denomination 10 repeated five times in counters with MISSISSIPPI inscribed in a ribbon at top center. Shull estimates a surviving population of 2-4 pieces, with this back serving as the plate note in his Southern States book (page 188). We cannot positively identify the tear mentioned on the PMG back label.
