Description
Lodi, NY- A(ugustus) Woodworth 3¢ Nov. 1, 1862 Harris-UNL PMG Very Good 8 Net.It appears that Harris mis-attributed this series of notes to Charles Woodworth rather than to his father, Augustus Woodworth, who is listed as a merchant in both the 1860 and 1870 census. Charles Woodworth was, in fact, a druggist according to the 1870 census, but was only nine years old in 1860. All signed notes seen have a clear first initial "A." supporting this corrected attribution. This 3¢ note was apparently part of an earlier 1862 issue that is markedly different in terms of style from the 1863 dated note illustrated in Harris which has a large red protector. This note is printed in blue ink with three small vignettes of the New York state coat of arms, an eagle and shield, and a dog head representing Fidelity. While there is a noticeable stain and a large fold split, one needs to keep in mind that this is, at this point, the only known example.
