Description

Extremely Rare New York Color Proof

Cazenovia, NY- Bank of Cazenovia $1 18__ G2a Proof PCGS Choice New 63.
The Bank of Cazenovia opened for business in 1856 and was closed in 1865 to make way for the National Bank of Cazenovia, charter 1271. This spectacular color Proof is a wonderful representative of the design. All notes from the concern were listed on pages 1486-1487 of James Haxby's United States Obsolete Bank Notes 1782-1866: Volume 3 as SENC, Surviving Example Not Confirmed. Evidently, this has changed slightly since the publishing of the book, but notes from this institution are still excessively rare, both in Proof and issued form. Our current $1 offering traces its provenance back to our January 2012 FUN auction, when it was part of an uncut sheet of Proofs from the bank. That sheet was comprised of two $1s, one $2, and one $5. It is likely that this set constitutes the remaining population of Proofs from the organization. The state Bank Department die is located at lower left on this ace, and an overall light red lace tint covers the face. At center is a dark, bold red die surrounding a large white ONE. The note is printed on India paper mounted to cardstock with six punch cancellations in the signature lines. We last auctioned this exact piece as part of The Charles R. Pease, Jr. Collection in January 2020, when it brought $1,200. Expect that figure to be tested or exceeded tonight.
