Description

Natchez, MS- Mississippi Shipping Company $100 Post Note 18__ Kraus 30273p Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The company was organized in 1836. Although the exact date of its demise has not been exactly determined, by early May 1840 it had pretty well been exposed as a fraud with $108,000 in outstanding circulation with few prospects for redemption. The bank's notes soon started regularly appearing in bank note lists with the notation NO SALE. This $100 one day post note has a vignette of the steamboat NATCHEZ steaming past two sailing vessels. This is flanked by two oval cameo-like medallion 100 counters. Both end panels have an identical sailing vessel vignette. The note is printed on India paper and has faint evidence of previous mounting (likely on the original card mounting). It was almost certainly part of Lot 821 in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. Almost certainly unique and likely to stay that way.
