Description

Pensacola, FL- Judah & LeBaron at LeBaron & Son, Mobile 25¢ Dec. 15, 1861 Benice 36 PMG Choice Fine 15 Net.
The PMG holder has misspelled the name of this issuer. William H. Judah and Leonard LeBaron were merchants in Pensacola who also doubled as private bankers. Another branch of the LeBaron family, headed by Charles LeBaron, ran a merchant business in Mobile, Alabama, where these notes were redeemable in current funds. Notes of this issue were printed on the back of bills of exchange. There is evidence of a previous mounting along with contemporary annotations and a modern pencil annotation of CTT.
PMG mentions thinning, apparently referring to an area of translucency that appears in the right margin well away from any printed portion of the design. We are presently aware of five examples of this denomination, including this note.
