Description

Cahaba, AL- Cahaba Insurance Company 50¢ Sep. 19, 1862 Gunther-Derby AO-128-$.50a Rosene UNL PMG Very Fine 25.
Printed by an unknown party on the backs of Cahaba Insurance Company 25¢ certificates of deposit, this excessively rare scrip features a small vignette of a car from a passenger train at center. The note is signed by J(oh)n A. Loder as secretary at lower right and was payable in either treasury or current notes. The "Treasury" part of the text likely represents Confederate Treasury Notes. This piece served as the plate note on page 56 of the Gunther-Derby reference. We have offered just one example of this design and denomination prior to now which was the note in this lot when it last crossed our auction block in January 2004. Notes from this issuer are always extremely popular, and they perform well in auction settings. PMG comments on evidence of a previous mounting.
