Description

San Francisco / Central City, CA- J.A. Crosby "3" Advertising Note Vlack-UNL ND (ca. 1870s?) PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
J.A. Crosby was a real estate agent with offices in San Francisco and Central City, CA. A search of city directories and census records has failed to unearth any definitive information on when this firm was using this note, but the 1869 series indicated on the note and a single 1869 classified real estate ad in an 1869 issue of the San Francisco Chronicle suggests that the note is from the 1869-1870s era. This is further confirmed by references to Central City and the Santa Maria valley which were being settled in the late 1860s, 1870s, and early 1880s. The note has a passing similarity to the face of $5 and the back of $10 Legal Tender Notes in circulation at the time. The issuer-specific information on this note appears to have been added with a rubberstamp rather than being printed by the note printer. An unusual California advertising note with the tantalizing possibility of additional ties to Santa Barbara County history. We are aware of one other example at present.
