Description

Eufaula, AL- Eastern Bank of Alabama $5 18__ G8a Gunther-Derby AO-182-$5a Remainder PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ.
The bank was organized in 1857 and remained in business until closing its doors sometime around 1866-67. The bank was left holding the bag on both forced and voluntary holdings of state and Confederate securities that became worthless after the war. This striking green and black note features a large vignette of a wagon load of cotton bales passing slaves at work in the fields at center flanked by an oval portrait of Washington at lower left and a vignette of a cotton bale being processed at a cotton broker at lower right. A large green and white FIVE protector and overall green tint complete the design.
