Description

Galveston, TX- (W.F.D. Karn? at) T.H. McMahan & Gilbert $2 Jan. 13, 1862 Medlar 20 PMG Choice Fine 15.
T.H. McMahan & Gilbert was a firm engaged in the private banking industry, but they were also involved in the cotton factor and commission merchant business during the Civil War era circa 1856-66. Based upon the various examples of this type which we have auctioned prior to now, which were signed by myriad different individuals but never McMahan or Gilbert, the firm likely served as a redemption agent utilized by various merchants in the area to ensure the notes they issued were secured. Our current offering bears a signature at lower right which appears to be that of "W.F.D. Karn." We can surmise that Karn either served as a secretary for the banking firm, or he was a merchant, signing notes which would be payable at this banking institution. This deuce features a depiction of a steam locomotive at left and a large red "TWO" overprint at center. A penned endorsement reads "Good / T.H. McMahan & Gilbert" at left, providing support for the theory that the individual who signed the note at lower right issued it. We last auctioned this exact representative in October 2024, when it brought $408.
