Description

Galveston, TX- Commercial and Agricultural Bank Counterfeit $10 Jan. 1, 1848 C8a Medlar 7 PMG Very Fine 20.
Chartered by Mexico in 1835, this institution did not open itself for business until 1848 with Samuel M. Williams as its president. Throughout its lifetime, it would face criticism from Andrew Jackson's anti-banking allies. This forgery is the only moderately available piece from this institution, as most designs from this bank are excessively rare due to the organization's tumultuous history. At left is a cotton plant, at center is a portrait of George Washington flanked by Ceres and Navigation, and at lower right is a young woman's portrait. A blue back completes the design.
