Description

Newark, NJ- Newark Whaling, Sealing & Manfg. Co. 37-1/2¢ Post Note Oct. 25, 1837 Wait 1545 PMG Choice Fine 15.
The company was incorporated in November 1833, primarily focused on whaling and sealing activities, and is believed to have closed its doors by the 1840s. This note, printed by C.P. Harrison & Son and issued during the Panic of 1837, features a dramatic whaling vignette, based on the painting Capturing a Sperm Whale by William Page, flanked by vignettes of a sailing vessel and goods on a wharf. Three Spanish 1 Reale coins fill the right end of the note. Very scarce and in demand due to the company name and the whaling and coin vignettes. This example is well circulated, but completely intact and repair-free with no meaningful impairments noted.
