Description
Cape May C.H., NJ- American Exchange Bank $1 Jan. 1, 1852 as G2 Proof PCGS Choice About New 58.The bank appears to have been organized circa late 1851. It remained in business for only a short time before being closed by state authorities on May 21, 1853. The bank's circulation was redeemed at the state treasurer's office with available money from the trust fund. The notes are listed in Haxby with the highest level of uncertainty (NDA - No Description Available) and only came to light with the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. The $1 design features a vignette of Agriculture and Liberty with ships and a train in the background. This is flanked by the state banking die at left and an oval male portrait at right. A large red ONE protector completes the design. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with four POCs in the signature lines (two of which are not punched through the card), and is one of ten examples of this note appearing in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. While we have offered a number of $1s without the red ONE protector, this is, surprisingly, our first offering of this variety which incorporates the red protector.
