Description

Military Endorsement "Maj. J.F. Cummings" (Stamp) T41 $100 1862 PF-22 Cr. 320A PMG About Uncirculated 55.
James F. Cummings was appointed Major and Commissary of Subsistence on August 16, 1862, reporting to the Commissary General in Tennessee. During the time period in which this note was issued, he served as General Purchasing Commissary for Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida. Cummings was responsible for immense amounts of money and is one of the very few military endorsers whose volume of payments warranted an endorsement stamp in addition to his manuscript endorsements. The host note is well printed, with good color, including the orange HUNDRED protector, on script CSA watermarked paper with Cummings' stamped issue endorsement and an indistinct red Augusta IP stamp on the back. PMG mentions pinholes and annotations on this example.
