Description
Russellville, KY- Southern Bank of Kentucky $5 18__ G336a Proof PCGS Gem New 65PPQ.The bank was originally chartered in 1839 with six branches. In 1850, the bank's existing charter was extended to 1880, but by 1865 the bank was winding up its affairs and issued its final report in 1867. The $5 design has a large center vignette of a farmyard with a black farmhand watering horses, while the lady of the house sews and keeps an eye on her son. This vignette is flanked by the portrait of a young boy that would soon be used on T32 Confederate $5 Treasury Notes via a donated set of plates from the Farmers & Mechanics Bank originally used for the Mechanics Savings Bank of Savannah, and a portrait of a young girl shading her eyes. There is a large red FIVE protector at bottom center. The note is printed on India paper with four POCs in the signature lines. There were 44 examples of this note spread across Lots 517-521 in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale, with many having varying degrees of impairment. This high grade example is one of the best available.
