Description

Connecticut Collector of the Revenue Retail License for Selling Foreign Distilled Spirits September 30, 1795 Very Fine.
An embossed $5 revenue stamp is at upper left and at left center is an United States embossed seal. The license is signed in red ink by John Chester (1749-1809). Chester was a militia officer and member of the Connecticut General Assembly before the Revolutionary War. He saw action with Connecticut troops from the Battle of Bunker Hill to the Battle of Trenton. He did not join the Continental Army and left military service after 1776. He went on to serve as Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives and later he would hold public offices. He also was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati. This example has some staining, a small internal split, and several edge tears with the longest being approximately .75 of an inch
