State of Georgia $4 from the Scarcer January 1, 1863 Emission
Milledgeville, GA- State of Georgia $4 Jan. 1, 1863 Cr. 9 PMG
Choice Fine 15.The note in this lot is not to be confused with the more obtainable January 1, 1864, dated Cr. 27 $4 note. Our current offering bears the January 1, 1863, date which is both more elusive and more prized by collectors. A meager 1,168 examples of this type were emitted by the State of Georgia, with Shull estimating in his 2007 reference that just 16 to 50 representatives of that number survived. This was a small change, odd denomination note, and as such, many examples are well worn. Though our current offering has seen time in circulation, it has survived without attracting any significant condition detractors, save for a few inconsequential stains. This piece represents one of the keys to the Georgia state note series, and it will enhance any collection to which it is added.
