Description

Hartford, CT- City Bank of Hartford $20 18__ as G18 Proof PCGS Banknote Gem Unc 66 PPQ.
The City Bank of Hartford was organized in 1851 and remained in business until 1863, when it became the City National Bank of Hartford which was chartered in July 1865. The design features a Native American woman gazing at the "advance of civilization" in the form of a distant city and several forms of modern transportation, an a multi-level canal lock. An oval vignette of a herd of cattle is at left while a cameo-like medallion profile portrait of William Shakespeare is at right. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with four POCs in the signature lines (India paper only). This note is possibly from an uncut sheet we auctioned in our 2023 Long Beach Expo US Currency Signature Auction that may have been subsequently cut. In that case, we estimate a surviving population of four $20s in Proof form. If that sheet is still intact then the surviving population would be closer to six pieces as this note would be part of a third sheet.
